Understanding the Basics of
Single Tooth & Full-Arch Implants
The most common type of dental implants are single tooth dental implants. These implants use a single dental implant, which is a small rod of titanium that is surgically implanted into your mouth, to support a dental crown. The crown is shaped just like your missing tooth, and is attached to the dental implant after it has healed and bonded with your mouth. Dental implants can also be used to support a full arch of teeth with an implant-supported permanent bridge or an implant-supported denture (overdenture). In this procedure, a series of 4-6 implants are placed in the upper, lower, or both arches of the teeth. Then, once they heal, a bridge is permanently attached, or a removable implant-supported denture is designed which will snap into place and attach to the implants.
Simple and Pain-Free
The Implant Placement Process
The implant placement process is quite straightforward. After you’re approved for a dental implant, scans of your mouth will be taken and Dr. Will Jones will begin developing your implant plan. Once this is complete, you’ll come in for your first appointment. Your mouth will be cleaned and numbed to ensure you feel no pain throughout the procedure. Dr. Will will create a small opening in your gums and jaw and surgically place the implant according to your plan. Once the implant is in place, the area will be cleaned and sutured shut. This process will be repeated if you are having multiple dental implants. The implant serves as an artificial tooth root and will bond with your jaw bone during a process called osseointegration. This makes for a sturdy base to which a beautiful artificial tooth can be attached.
Complete Your Restoration
Placing the Dental Crown
It takes about 3-6 months for a dental implant to completely bond with your oral tissues. During this time, Dr. Will will create your custom dental crown. Once your mouth has healed completely, you’ll come back in for your follow-up appointment. Your implant-supported artificial tooth will be checked to ensure it fits properly, and then it will be attached to your implant, completing the procedure.

The Benefits Of
Dental Implants
The biggest benefit of dental implants is that they look and feel completely natural. Your implant restoration will be supported by your implant and will never shift or move when you speak. In addition, our doctors will ensure that your restoration matches your surrounding teeth, and looks completely natural.
Dental implants are also the best long-term method for restoring your missing teeth. While they are expensive, they typically last 30 years or longer, making them the longest-lasting method of tooth replacement. Over time, dental implants can actually be cheaper than alternative treatments such as dentures and dental bridges.
Dental implants are also very easy to care for. If you have a single-tooth implant, you can treat it just like a natural tooth, and brush and floss regularly to keep your mouth healthy. Implant restorations like bridges and implant dentures require more care, but are still easy to maintain.
You will also feel more confident about yourself with dental implants. You can replace missing teeth with new teeth, and you won’t have to worry about your teeth slipping when you speak or chew.
How Long
Do dental ImplantS Last?
You can expect your dental implant to last at least 30 years with proper care, and it’s very common for patients to keep their implants for the rest of their lives.
However, it is important to note that the implant-supported restoration, such as a dental crown, will not usually last this long. Unlike the implant itself, the restoration is exposed to wear & tear from chewing and biting. It’s common to replace restorations like crowns every 10-15 years.
The best way to keep your implant and your implant restoration healthy is to see a dentist like Our doctors at The Burkitt Center for Comprehensive Dentistry every six months for a consultation. We will check on your implant and restoration, and ensure that they are healthy and strong.
Comparing Dentures
And Dental Implants
Compared to dentures, dental implants are a better overall choice for replacing one missing tooth or multiple missing teeth. There are a few reasons for this.
The biggest reason is that dental implants support a healthy jaw bone, and dentures do not. Dental implants are implanted directly into the jaw bone, so they stimulate the jaw bone when you chew and bite, keeping it strong and preventing bone loss.
In contrast, dentures rest on your gums or clip to your remaining healthy teeth, and do not stimulate the underlying jaw bone. Over time, the bone in the area will weaken and deteriorate, which can eventually alter your facial structure and appearance.
However, dental implants are much more expensive than dentures. They may not be the best option if you are on a tight budget, and can’t afford the cost of dental implant treatment. Despite this, though, dental implants are often a better option in the long term, since they last a very long time.
We recommend scheduling an appointment with our team to learn more about the cost of dental implants. If you can’t pay for implant surgery up front, financing your treatment at our office may be a good option for qualified patients.
